About The Trek

A short but challenging trek for those who has less time but would like to do a proper trek in the region. It crosses the famous Tar La at 5250 altitude before reaching the most beautiful village of Mangyu. It starts from the Lamayuru village where we visit the famous bone monastery and ends in Alchi village; the only village in Ladakh with a monastery which is not on a hill top. All the camp sites are pre defined and mostly near some streams near the villages.

Day By Day Itinerary

Day 01 : Meeting and assistance on arrival at International Airport.  Transfer to Hotel in New Delhi. 

Day 02 : Transfer to Domestic Airport to connect flight to Leh.  Meeting and assistance on arrival at Leh Airport and transfer to Hotel. Rest of the day free for acclimatization.

Day 03 : Acclimatization / introductory tour of Shey, Thiksey and Hemis monasteries. Overnight hotel at Leh.

Day 04 : Lamayuru to Wanla.  Early morning drive from Leh to Lamayuru.  After getting ready for the trek start trekking down towards the village, cross the stream, then gradually climbing across a mountainside reach a small valley which you follow as far as the Prinkiti – La (3200 mts.)  Go down into a narrow gorge until reaching the village of Shi – La.  Cross the river over a bridge, then take the Right Bank  to reach Wanla.  Trek times: 03 – 04 hrs.

Day 05 : Wanla – Urtsi.  Go along the Yapola on the left bank to reach village of Penjila after crossing the river (bridge).  From Penjila, go up a valley, which goes off at right angles (north – east).  After one hour, leave the main valley and go straight north  along a stream, which leads to Urtsi.  Trek times: 05 – 06 hrs.

Day 06 : Urtsi – Base of Tar – La.  From the camp, the path is well – marked but difficult until the Tar –La (5250 mts.)  Pitch the camp at  the base of Tar – La.

Day 07 : Base of Tar –La to Mangyu.  Start climbing Tar –La to reach an altitude of 5250 mts.  Climbing down can pose problem for the  horses, difficult mass of fallen rocks.  After the decent you reach Tar Village the path goes up along the mountainside to a new  pass, then easy descent towards Mangyu.  Attractive village and interesting monastery.  Camp near the stream beneath the  village.

Day 08 : Mangyu – Alchi (Via Gera).   From Mangyu very good path into a beautiful narrow valley.  After few hours reach the Indus  Valley at the village of Gera.  Follow the Indus upstream, pass Lardo, and continue along the hillside down to a road and finally  Alchi.

Day 09 : Day at leisure in Leh.  Overnight in Hotel.

Day 10 : Transfer to Airport, to connect flight to Delhi.  Meeting and assistance on  arrival at Delhi Airport and transfer to Hotel in Delhi.

Day 11 : Transfer to International airport to fly home.

About The Trek

This is a challenging trek traversing the Ladakh Mountains on a little trekked  and unspoiled route through wild and rugged high altitude scenery. This trek is fairly tough traversing varied scenery and passing through small villages. The trail passes through Wanla pass over Pritinkla (3800 m) and then to Hinju valley, again over Konzkela (4950 mts), into chilling over Dundunchen la (4800 m) and then to crafts men village. This village in Ladakh is famous for its carfts work. Local people make things like Ladles, Tchang pot, Tea pot out of copper and silver jewelery. After this we follow the Zanskar river and crossing by cable car to Shingo. While passing through beautiful valley of Rumbak we visit Rumbak Gompa, Stok and then drive back to Leh.    

Day By Day Itinerary

Day 04 : Lamayuru to Hinju.  Early morning drive from Leh to Lamayuru.  From Lamayuru monastery descent towards the village, cross a stream, ascent across mountain side onto each a small valley, go on and on in the valley till Prinkitila (3720 M). Descent into a gorge arrive at Shilla, cross a bridge continue to the right bank upto Wanla. Now follow Yapola river on the left for 2 Hrs upto PanjiLa after crossing the bridge. Go up the valley, leading off at right angles, after one hour trek leave the valley on the left, to the Hinju. Trek times: 05 – 06 hrs.

Day 05 : Hinju- Sumda.  After crossing the valley of Hinju, leave one more valley on the left and ascent to the pass. Last ascent is steep. Again from the summit of KonzkeLa (4950 M), long descent to pastures, follow the trail on the left bank along the mountainside. Here path gets lost, rather close to the river. There are circular walls. Before Sumda is a block cave, so many good campsites at the edge of the river, but continue walk along the left bank along the mountainside till Sumda. Trek times: 05 – 06 hrs.

Day 06 : Sumda- Chilling.  From the camp, the path is well – marked but difficult until the Tar –La (5250 mts.)  Pitch the camp at  the base of Tar – La. After crossing the valley for about 1Hr path is difficult to follow until reaching rock shelters. Cross the bridge and ascent DundunchenLa (4800 M). After descending the pass south side, slope is steep and continue towards a valley, which gets narrower and in the end it opens out at Chilling. Upto Chilling, there is not much of water. Chilling is a village of craftsmen, here popular work with metal like copper, tin, silver and make ladles, tchang pots, teapots etc. Trek times: 06 – 07 hrs.

Day 07 : Chilling - Singo. From Chilling follow Zanskar river up stream for about 2 hrs then cross it in a cable car, then there is a well defined path, Skaya is 2 Hrs from the river crossing. After some distance from Skaya, the trail joins with the route of Stok - Hemis (Markha Valley trek). From here Shingo with 2-3 houses is 3 Hrs away. Trek times: 05 – 06 hrs.

Day 08 : Singo – Rumbak.   Ascent to GandaLa (4700 M), it is 2 Hrs easy climb descent into a beautiful valley and after passing Yurutse village, cross the river on right bank, cross an escarpment which leads into the valley of Rumbak Gompa. From Rumbak gompa there is a route joining Spituk monastery no pass in between all easy going. Trek times: 03 – 04 hrs.

Day 09 : Rumbak – Stok. After by passing this beautiful stopping valley, ascent upto StokLa by very steep, zigzag, difficult footpath by now it is 3 Hrs. Now steep descent to summer pastures of Stok and then easy walk upto Stok, follow the river, which comes from Stok - kangri massif. From Stok drive to Leh which is one hours drive to Leh. Trek times: 04 – 05 hrs.

Day 10 : Transfer to Airport, to connect flight to Delhi.  Meeting and assistance on  arrival at Delhi Airport and transfer to Hotel in Delhi.

Day 11 : Transfer to International airport to fly home.
